General Motors filed for its public offering in August 2010, just over a year after it emerged from its taxpayer-funded bankruptcy. GM sold 478 million common shares at $33 each after raising its offering price from its original estimate of $26 to $29. It also sold another $4.35 billion in preferred shares, raising far more than the $13 billion it had originally projected. In total, the No. 1 U.S. carmaker raised more than $20 billion.
