The Jerry Sandusky conviction and Catholic priest scandals shouldn’t obscure the larger picture: sexual abuse of children—or at least reported cases of it—fell more than 60 percent from 1992 to 2010, according to a June New York Times
report. Expert David Finkelhor says this is likely due to better public awareness, prevention, and prosecution of offenders, among other factors.
