Ronald Reagan’s 1982 SOTU: George Washington Reference
Poking fun at both himself and the media during his first State of the Union address of his first term, Ronald Reagan mentioned the Father of Our Country, who of course delivered the first regular annual address to Congress on January 8, 1790. Said Reagan, who was the oldest president at age 69 when elected in 1980, “For our friends in the press who place a high premium on accuracy, let me say: I did not actually hear George Washington say that.”
