Costa Rica - Group D
In an easier group, Costa Rica would not be such an obvious choice for a fourth-place finish, but as with the U.S. team, the draw has not been kind. Even so, the Costa Rican team has the feel of one that’s not quite there…but worth keeping an eye on. Brian Oviedo’s injury leaves them without one of their strongest defenders, so this team could concede a lot of goals but…who knows, the Costa Ricans may come of age on the big stage.
Players to watch: In Oviedo’s absence, pressure will be on Junior Diaz to marshal the defense against some of the best strikers in the world. Bryan Ruiz and youngster Joel Campbell will be hoping to prove they can fire in the goals against the best.
Prediction: Despite their best efforts, it’s hard to see past a fourth-place finish.
