Marion Cotillard – Nine (2009, Weinstein Company)
Like Cumberbatch, Cotillard has been very smart with the roles she has chosen, and there aren’t quite as many stinkers to choose from. Still, this misfiring musical by Chicago director Rob Marshall falls firmly under the category of “Ambitious Disaster.” Casting Daniel Day-Lewis in a musical comedy remake of an Italian New Wave classic certainly qualifies as ambitious, and the result was (through no fault of Cotillard’s) a total disaster.
