Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Legendarily produced as a side project by a group of industrial filmmakers in Pittsburgh, Living Dead codified the zombie movie (and later TV show) and showed independent filmmakers how to use horror as a gateway to Hollywood. Danny Boyle revived the zombie genre 30 years later with faster zombies in 28 Days Later.
