Sen. John Glenn, D-OH, is strapped into a centrifuge by NASA's Carlous Gillis (L) and Technical Sgt. Mac Baker, a centrifuge mission controller, at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas, on February 19. Glenn, 76, completed two 9-minute missions simulating liftoff in the space shuttle. During each ride, he experienced gravitational forces about three times stronger than his own body weight. A team of more than 12 Air Force doctors, specialists and technicians ensured the Ohio senator and former Marine fighter pilot's ride would be uneventful.
