New Hampshire fell one spot this year. Over the past three years, preventable hospitalizations there fell 23 percent. The state ranks first in community and environment measures, such as child poverty levels and air pollution.
Strengths: Low percentage of children in poverty; high immunization coverage among adolescents; low prevalence of diabetes.
Challenges: High rates of drug deaths; high prevalence of excessive drinking; low per capita public health funding.
