An interesting tip from Consumer Reports for lowering the cost of regular purchases: Generic goods, such as cereal, cake mixes, paper goods and other household staples, are found at the very lowest and highest supermarket shelves. Why? Because retailers can charge manufacturers a fee to be at eye level.
