Sure it’s just a faster, prettier Mario…but it’s faster…and prettier. The Sega Genesis’s jump to 16-bit graphics ensured that Sonic would be the icon for the ‘90s that Mario had been for the ‘80s, and ensured that Sega replaced Nintendo as the industry leader of the decade.
