Matthew McConaughey – Failure to Launch

You’d think that picking the absolute worst Matthew McConaughey film would be a daunting challenge. Following his promising early rolls in “Dazed and Confused” and “Lone Star,” McConaughey spent the next 15 years churning out bomb after bomb. While there certainly is a vast array of choices, none is quite as terrible as 2006’s “Failure to Launch,” where McConaughey plays a giant man-child who Sarah Jessica Parker somehow falls in love with.

For a much better time, John Sayles’s “Lone Star” is a wonderful meditation on our relationship to the past. McConaughey’s square jaw is well used as a small-town hero whose son doubts the official version of the legend. When the truth is uncovered, it is of course more complicated than you think.
