Alan Turing is, without question, one of the most fascinating characters of the 20th century. He’s a hero to computer scientists, mathematicians and gay-rights activists, and his efforts were instrumental in cracking Nazi coded communications during the war. In 2011, the script topped Hollywood’s annual list of best unproduced screenplays. Now that it’s finally arrived on the screen (with the Internet’s favorite actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, in the lead) there has been some understandable furor over its downplaying of Turing’s homosexuality. Nevertheless, it could prove to be the exact sort of brainy thriller that this year has been missing
