Pocahontas
Pocahontas was the first woman to appear on a $20 paper bill in 1865. The daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of Tsenacommacah, Pocahontas was captured by the English in 1613. Once she regained her freedom, she chose to remain with the English and married an Englishman. In 1616, she traveled to London to serve as an example of a “civilized savage” in the hopes of increasing interest in the Jamestown settlement.
